edding has sold refillable products for almost as long as it’s been in business, since the company’s founders expressly committed in the early 60s to generating the smallest possible carbon footprint.
Why are there two different refill systems?
Essentially, different refill systems are needed depending on the construction of each marker. To use the drop system, you have to unscrew the marker’s mouthpiece (the part that holds the tip) and drop the refill ink into the shaft using the pipette provided. The advantage of this system is that the pen can be used immediately after it’s put back together. Markers with this construction, including our classic edding 3000 permanent marker, can usually be refilled using both refill systems.
Other markers, which can’t be unscrewed, need to be refilled using the capillary system. To use the capillary system, you have to stand the edding marker tip-down in the refill bottle for at least one hour (but ideally overnight). The ink will then be automatically absorbed thanks to capillary action – an exceedingly clean and simple affair! Very often, the refill system you use is a matter of personal preference. For especially fine markers like the edding 400, it can simply be more practical to use the capillary system.

If the refill system doesn’t depend on the construction of your marker, you can choose the system that works best for you. In all cases, refilling an edding marker is quick, easy, and not just good for the environment – it’s great for your bank balance, too!
Conserving resources with our refill inks
The more existing edding markers we refill, the fewer new markers need to be made. And the fewer new markers made, the better we can protect our natural resources and the environment, for instance by conserving plastic during production. Our aluminium markers are also refillable, ensuring that we use less of this raw material in new production, too. And if the tip of a marker loses its effectiveness over time, for many marker models it can easily be replaced with spare tips.
Refill, not landfill!
By extending the useful life of our refillable markers, we can help to avoid creating large volumes of waste. Even the supposedly small permanent, whiteboard, flipchart and text markers we dispose of when empty can add up to a not-so-small mountain of rubbish. You can avoid this problem as much as possible thanks to our refill systems. And if a marker ever actually stops working, you can dispose of it in an edding return box. In partnership with a recycling company, we’ve developed a sustainable recycling process that allows much of the recycled plastic to be reused in the production of new edding products.
